What is the Difference Between a Plastic Surgeon And a Cosmetic Surgeon?
There is a significant and noticeable different between plastic surgeons and “cosmetic surgeons” that the general public does not fully understand. Plastic Surgeons are trained in cosmetic surgery as well as reconstructive surgery, this is a very specific kind of physician. “Cosmetic surgeon” is a non-specific term that can be a legitimate plastic surgeon or someone whom is untrained in plastic surgery who does these procedures (often poorly and dangerously). If a surgeon uses the term “cosmetic surgeon” or “aesthetic surgeon”, they are likely not a plastic surgeon. They may be excellent dermatologists, OB/Gyn doctors, family practice doctors, internal medicine doctors or dentists to name a few but that does not make them qualified to do cosmetic surgery.
To become board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a plastic surgeon must first complete intensive training in an accredited training program. Thereafter, the surgeon must pass rigorous written and oral examinations given by the board. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is one of only 24 accredited specialty boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and is the only board recognized by the ABMS to certify a surgeon in plastic surgery. There are a number of other boarding organizations that include “facial”, “aesthetic” or “cosmetic” in the title. These are not recognized by the ABMS and do not have the same training requirements. To verify a physician’s board status, contact the American Board of Plastic Surgery at (215) 587-9322. You may also contact the American Board of Medical Specialties at 1(800) 776-2378 or www.abms.com
The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS) is not recognized by the ABMS and requires no prerequisite training in plastic surgery. According to the ABCS website, this is superior to any other boards for cosmetic surgery as it is the only board certifying doctors in cosmetic surgery!!! I find this extremely offensive. In fact a “cosmetic surgeon” practicing in my local area whom is actually in primary care tells his patients that he is “better than a plastic surgeon because he is a cosmetic surgeon and fixes the plastic surgeons mistakes!!!”
Very few, if any plastic surgeons are certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery. No non-plastic surgeons are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons.

Finding Beverly Hills Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Specialists
Does some aspect of your physical appearance bother you so much that you have decided to change it? Many people travel to California to have their surgery, believing that they will receive the best possible care from Beverly Hills cosmetic plastic surgery specialists. What is the best way to find a surgeon if you are not familiar with the area?
One way to look for a cosmetic surgeon in a distant area is through referrals. Talk to a physician about the procedure you desire, and ask him or her to locate someone from that area who may be able to help you. This process can take several days, but you may be able to take comfort in knowing that your doctor has referred you.
Of course, even though your doctor may have referred you, he or she probably does not know the surgeon personally. This may make it difficult to evaluate the quality of the surgeon’s work. You may or may not be satisfied with the results of locating a referral doctor in this manner.
Another option is to try to find someone in the Beverly Hills area who has personally experienced successful results from a particular surgeon. This may not be extremely practical, however. Most people do not have many friends or acquaintances that live in this area of California.
Some people search for and locate a physician through online referral services. Many websites offer testimonials from satisfied clients. Some even post pictures of their clients taken before and after the surgery. Remember that these sites feature only reviews of patients happy with the results of their cosmetic procedures.
Some cosmetic surgery financing companies also offer assistance in locating a surgeon. Of course, these companies are more likely to find surgeons who are most willing to work with them. These physicians may or may not be the most accomplished cosmetic surgeons available.
If you are fortunate, you may be able to learn which surgeons high profile clients frequent. These individuals are highly likely to seek out only the best experts with which to trust their appearance. Of course, you may also find yourself paying top prices for their services, so be prepared for this as well.
If you decide to seek out Beverly Hills cosmetic plastic surgery specialists to perform your procedure, interview them first. Make sure that the surgery techniques – and the cost – will offer the best options for you!
