PostHeaderIcon Eye Lift Surgery – Eyelid Reshaping

An eye lift or eyelid surgery is a type of cosmetic surgery. It is used by men and women who want to look younger. Eyelid surgery can give people a more open look to their eyes or it can reshape their eyes. The technical name for an eye lift is blepharoplasty. With the focus on looking more youthful, this surgery may be popular, but it is also complicated, so you need to take precautions.

The eyes may be the mirror to the soul. But sometimes, when people look at themselves in the mirror, they can only focus on droopy eyes or bags under the eyes. They may consider blepharoplasty, which is the medical name of an eye lift. During an eye lift, the surgeon makes an incision, through which excess fat can be removed. The incision can be made inside the eyelid, or just beneath the lashes. If there is excess skin, this is removed as well. The skin and the muscle can then be made tighter. With the skin tightened, the eye appears younger and more open. Puffiness is reduced. Crinkled skin on the eyelid or under the eye can appear smoother. An eye lift can be done on the upper eye or the lower eye or both.

As with any cosmetic surgery, this is not a cheap procedure. The cost will depend on whether you are having both upper and lower lids done, or just one area. Cost begins at $2000 and is probably not going to be covered by insurance, so you will need to find a way to pay for this yourself.

There are also risks to consider, which can include the issues of anesthesia, as well as potential scarring and infection. The eyes are very delicate, so it is essential that you use a board certified and experienced cosmetic surgeon.

PostHeaderIcon Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

As our eye ages, we frequently note an excess of skin and “puffiness” of the upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty surgically removes redundant skin and fat of the eyelids. The procedure can address drooping upper and sagging lower eyelids as well. In younger patients seeking to address “bags” of the lower eyelids, redundant fat can be removed with an invisible inside incision. Though Blepharoplasty surgery offers numerous aesthetic benefits, it will not eliminate crow’s feet and dark circles. This procedure is often done in combination with a brow lift for a more complete rejuvenation. Blepharoplasty may also be combined with a facelift when appropriate.

The Consultation
Board Certified Plastic Surgeon will typically spend 45 minutes to an hour obtaining your medical history, examining you and discussing in detail your concerns, his observations and recommendations. In addition to eyelid contour and appearance, brow position and forehead contour will be assessed. Sometimes, brow lift will be recommended to potentially optimally enhance upper eyelid, brow and forehead appearance. Surgeons usually do the brow lift using limited incisions and the endoscope.

The Surgery
Eyelid surgery should only be performed at a fully-accredited surgical facility. Anesthesia for the procedure is usually a combination of intravenous sedation and local anesthetic. When the procedure is performed in conjunction with facelift or brow lift, general anesthesia is used, administered by board certified anesthesiologists.

During the procedure, the redundant skin is marked and removed along with underlying excess fat. Lower eyelid fat and skin is also removed using an incision beneath the lash line or an internal incision (for fat removal only).

At the time of surgery local anesthesia is used, while post-operative pain is generally diminished with oral analgesia and a cold mask. On the 5th to 7th day after surgery the sutures are generally removed. Post-operative swelling and bruising are common, largely resolving after 10 to 14 days. Makeup can be applied after one week and strenuous exercise should be avoided for one month. Driving should always be avoided until oral narcotics are no longer needed for pain control.

The Recovery
Patients can generally go home same the day as the procedure, though a responsible adult should stay with them the first night. Patients undergoing this procedure at the time of a brow lift or facelift will generally stay 1 or 2 nights at a post-operative facility. Ambulation is encouraged the night of surgery, but any strenuous activity should not be avoided for at least 2 weeks following the procedure. Though it typically takes at least 2 weeks for most of the swelling and bruising to resolve, many patients see an overall improvement in appearance after 5 to 7 days. By two weeks patients generally feel that they appear more rested and more attractive.

What are some of the Particular Concerns regarding Eyelid Surgery?
While most patients are quite pleased with their results, blepharoplasty, like any surgery, has potential risks that must be considered. Scars will be present, and while they usually diminish considerably, they will still be visible to some degree. Most patients find that blepharoplasty scarring can be well concealed with makeup. The surgery also changes eyelid shape is changed and position. Inherent to this is the rare risk of temporary or permanent loss of vision. Occasional dryness of the eyes can occur as well.

Making the decision
Every surgical procedure has inherent benefits, risks and limitations. While considering any surgical procedure, patients should use their pre-operative consultations to ask any question they may have and freely express their aesthetic goals. As a plastic surgeon, taking sufficient time to discuss, plan and individualize each procedure is necessary time that is well spent.

PostHeaderIcon Eyelid Surgery – Special Considerations For Older Plastic Surgery Patients

In 2007, the eyelid lift was the number one cosmetic procedure of the 55 and older crowd. That age group also accounted for nearly 50% of all the people having the procedure. Now, cosmetic surgical procedures certainly aren’t just for the older crowd anymore.

Men and women in the 30s and 40s are turning back the years as well. However, because their skin still has good elasticity, they can use the non-invasive methods to regenerate their skin. As you get older, your skin loses elasticity and surgical techniques are the only way to truly get rid of the wrinkles and tighten the skin.

While surgical cosmetic work is common in people 55 and older, this means that the surgeon and the patient have to take more precautions. Here are some of the special considerations for older patients seeking an eyelid lift:

1. Overall health-This is not to say that everyone seeking plastic surgery that is less than 55 is in perfect health, but the chance of having certain health issues is increased with age. For any patient, but especially older ones, it is important to divulge all medical concerns before having an eyelid lift.

Since this is a major surgery and anesthesia is used, a history of heart attack or stroke makes elective surgery more dangerous. High blood pressure can also cause problems when anesthesia is administered. Operations are stressful on the body, whether you are asleep or not. Diabetes is another medical condition that is contraindicated for elective procedures.

Specific to an eyelid lift, older patients are more susceptible to dry eye syndrome so the surgeon must adjust his technique to make sure the condition is not created or exacerbated.

2. Medicines-Not only do the conditions create problems during the operation, the medications you are taking to control the problem can make the procedure more dangerous. If you are taking any medications, you have to tell the surgeon.

The anesthesiologist needs to know what may interact or reduce the effectiveness of the anesthesia. He will have to watch you more closely during the eyelid lift procedure to make sure you do not become distressed while under.

3. Combination procedures-It is not uncommon for plastic surgery patients to combine an eyelid surgery with others like the brow lift or face lift. For older patients who may have a medical condition, be taking medications or are quite advanced in age, combining procedures may not be a good idea.

The longer anyone is under anesthesia, the more stressful it is for the body. For older patients who have medical conditions, it is even more stressful and dangerous. So, though it is convenient, it may not be a good idea.

Not only should older patients be forthcoming with any medical conditions, they should also carefully choose the right surgeon to perform their eyelid procedure. Anyone seeking plastic surgery should verify the credentials of their surgeon.

He should be board certified to perform plastic surgery and licensed to practice in the state you’re in. Surgery is a risky process anyway, but if you add age and medical problems to the mix, it becomes riskier. To get the most from your operation and to make it safer, find a surgeon with experience working with older patients as well as performing eyelid lift procedures.

His knowledge and experience works in your favor if there are special considerations he needs to make. You don’t have necessarily had to mix the idea of looking younger through plastic surgery; you just have to be a little more careful.

Since surgical cosmetic work is common in older people, cosmetic surgeons have to take more precautions. At the Center for Plastic Surgery in Northern Virginia, eyelift surgery is performed after all medical supervisions. Visit http://www.cpsdcos.com.
